Your Quick & Simple Review: “Adrift”

Based on the true story of Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin), who, in 1983, set out on a journey from Tahiti to San Diego and unknowingly sailed directly into Hurricane Raymond. As they battled 140 knot winds and 40-foot waves the category 4 hurricane stayed right on their tail.  Tami, who was knocked unconscious, wakes, after the storm passes, to find Richard badly injured and their boat almost destroyed.  Now she has to find a way to save them both.

So far this Summer season, we’ve had a nice selection of action and comedy films to choose from mixed with a small offering of drama flicks.  Now we have a nice dramatic love story that, for me, is actually better than most of the films I’ve seen so far.

Shailene and Sam have great on screen chemistry and the way the story is told, in two timelines, we get a good look at this love story, thru good times and bad.  Credit to director Kormakur, for laying out clues throughout the film that gave us an idea of what was happening, however, unless you’re really paying attention to what was being said, you could easily miss it.  But, if you do, that just adds to the twist of the films narrative.

All in all, I really loved this one.  Then again, the true story films are usually my favorite films.  And with the lack of descent dramatic love stories out, I think Adrift will make for a nice change that doesn’t involve any lead characters wearing capes or having super powers.  That’s why I’m saying that this one is A Must See Movie this weekend.
